Irene and Yolanda were just a few weeks old when they were rescued from a medical lab where they were being used for research purposes.
Despite everything they had been through, they didn’t hold back when it came to enjoying their new life at Gaia Sanctuary.
Sometimes in life you meet someone that just gets you, and that was the case with Irene and Yolanda. They just got each other, and their friendship was impenetrable. Whether they were digging for worms or sunbathing in the garden, they loved nothing more than being together.
As well as loving each other, they also loved being papered and stroked, and were incredibly affectionate with humans, which is not the kind of behaviour that most people would associate with a chicken.
Their display of loving feelings went even further when Samuel, a week old bull calf rescued from the dairy industry, arrived at the sanctuary. Recognizing that Samuel was in need of a friend they choose to spend their days by his side keeping him company, and the three of them even slept together at night.
Irene and Yolanda’s friendship lasted their entire lives. Then last Spring, on a Sunday afternoon, Yolanda appeared alone at the door of her carers. When they noticed that she was waiting for them they scooped her up in their arms and went to try and find out what the problem was.
Just a few minutes later, they found Irene’s lifeless body in the hen’s enclosure. It seemed that Yolanda had been trying to ask for help for her best friend who had just passed away.
After Irene crossed the rainbow bridge Yolanda seemed to lose the zest for life. Together from the start, it just wasn’t the same for Yolanda after Irene had left. She missed her friend so much that she also passed away a couple of weeks later. Their love for life left a lasting impression on everyone that knew them.
