Jen is Veganuary's Digital Marketing & Engagement Officer. Like most people, she was raised on an omnivorous diet. She's not sure when she began getting curious about veganism, but there was always something about food production that she felt she wanted to know more about. She came across a video called ‘Meet Your Meat’ on YouTube and, after this, her diet changed forever!
I wanted to know more so I watched Earthlings; this was the final push I needed. I know most people won’t watch documentaries like this (or the British version, ‘From the Land of Hope and Glory’) because they are graphic and upsetting. But I felt like I needed to see this reality to shock myself into changing a lifelong habit. I knew this was the right choice. Once I saw the reality of these industries, to buy any more animal products would be like saying “I support what you’re doing – take my money”. I’m sad that I ever supported it in the first place.
After seeing this brutal truth, going vegan was easy for me. I began trying new things, and finding out what I liked. I gradually bought all my cosmetics and other lifestyle items vegan, as I used old products up. I started talking about cruelty-free options on my YouTube channel, and I quickly became passionate about this subject.
I’m so glad that I made this change. It has opened my eyes to a variety of important issues, such as how much an omnivorous diet can affect your health and the environment. It has led me to my dream career and gave my life more purpose.
The great thing about Veganuary is you can choose to try it for 31 days, and you get so much support! With so many vegan options available now, it’s never been easier to give it a go!
