The Secret to Balancing Wellness and Business for Plant-Powered Entrepreneurs

Mastering the art of plate-spinning whilst attempting to remain healthy is no mean feat. Luckily, Vicky Shilling of The Flourishing Pantry is on hand to show you how.

Is it possible to balance optimum health while running a business? On the face of it they might seem the polar opposite. But when you look closer at the people who are achieving balance with their health and work, you’ll notice some powerful common traits.

Wellness is “the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind.” Spending hours meditating, making fresh wholesome meals from scratch and going on yoga retreats would be incredible for achieving optimum wellness. But a life filled with only ‘wellness’ doesn’t propel your business forward.

However if we went into full ‘business’ mode, burning the candle at both ends, working all hours, hunched over a laptop in a state of stress reacting to emails, enquiries and urgent business, our health is going to suffer.

So where is the balance?

From interviewing and coaching countless entrepreneurs I’ve noticed three simple things that help achieve balance between wellness and brand building. None of them are out of reach and are all things you could start doing right now:

Keep Things Simple

Running a business and achieving wellness in our lives can seem extremely complicated. With advice flying at us from every angle of the internet, our friends and family telling us what to do and the abundance of courses and qualifications available it can seem totally overwhelming to know where to start.

But running a business and looking after your health don’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler the better.

From the entrepreneurs I speak to, starting with the basics and doing one thing at a time yields the greatest results. When we keep it simple, we know we’ve tried things to the best of our abilities, and can analyse the successes and failures in order to move forward.

Similarly with your health – keep it simple and achievable. If you are thinking about moving to a more plant-based diet, why not try changing just your breakfasts or your milk to start with? Assess your progress – what worked and what didn’t – and then add another meal when you’ve learned from your first step. Slow and incremental progress drives us as humans. Keep it simple and see your successes in both business and health grow.   

Start Your Day With a Great Routine

How does your day start? Alarm on snooze? Grabbing your phone to check emails and social media hits overnight? Rushing straight to the desk with a coffee and throwing yourself straight in to the day?

A great morning routine, containing just a few basic rituals, can set up your whole day to be both productive for your business and peppered with wellness habits too. Every successful entrepreneur you ask has a morning routine that sets them up for the day, and helps them achieve that balance we’re all desperately looking for.

Try including one or two of these healthy habits into your morning, before opening up your phone or computer, to start achieving more balance in your work and wellness:

  • Write a to-do list
  • Write three things you’re grateful for
  • Eat your breakfast without any distractions
  • Plan a healthy and delicious plant-based lunch
  • Do five minutes of meditation

Not only will doing these things help get your day started with a wellness activity, they will also help you be more productive, positive and prepared for whatever the business day ahead throws at you. 

Make Your Body and Mind a Priority

We all know that our physical and mental health affects our ability to work. If we’re sick and can’t get to the desk, our business suffers. But how to do prevent ourselves getting to that stage of burn-out and illness?

By stepping away from the desk. Taking a break isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity and should be scheduled and prioritised just as much as working on your website and building your email list.

Movement in the form of walking, yoga or exercise helps our brains and bodies function better and often give us space to have our best and most creative ideas. Stopping to nourish our bodies with wholesome, plant-based food will fuel us on with energy to face the next challenge. Taking time for a gratitude practice, journaling or some meditation strengthen the mind to look for the positives, untangle the internal dialogue and learn to tap into the inner mentor.

None of these additions to your day are a waste of time, which is sometimes how they can feel if we’ve got ‘urgent’ emails to attend to. Instead, they’re actually an essential part of growing a business. The entrepreneurs with thriving brands live by this. Knowing that our body and mind directly affect our ability to grow our businesses, moves them to the top of our priority list.
