Are you interested in helping the environment or concerned about animal welfare, but going vegan seems too overwhelming? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Veganism can be daunting at first, but it’s more straightforward than you think.
“…It’s too high maintenance”
Being vegan on the go has never been easier. Most of the UK’s leading supermarkets, high street cafés and restaurant chains offer great vegan options, so it’s unlikely you’ll be stuck with just a fruit pot for lunch. There’s also an abundance of accidentally vegan junk food and alcohol. Although holidays might require some planning ahead (check out Happy Cow), eating out as a vegan generally isn’t difficult or restrictive.
“…I don’t want to throw my leather shoes away”
Very few people go completely vegan overnight. It’s a journey and you’ll get there in your own time. If it takes a while to use your make-up, leather attire and cleaning products, that’s absolutely fine. With vegan-friendly fashion, cosmetics and toiletries on the rise, you can swap your everyday essentials for vegan alternatives that work just as well (if not better).
“…I don’t have the willpower”
It may seem like vegans are making a huge sacrifice by avoiding animal products and that it requires lots of effort to maintain this every day. But that’s (usually) not the case at all.
Exploiting animals is cruel and unnecessary and there are many environmental and health benefits of veganism. Once you realise this, being vegan doesn’t take any willpower whatsoever. It feels like the most natural and normal way to live your life.
Yes, you might occasionally be tempted by non-vegan foods and you’ll make mistakes, but that’s part of the journey. If you lose motivation, remind yourself why you wanted to go vegan and you’ll be back on track in no time.
“…I can’t give up cheese”
For many people, cheese is delicious. So is steak. So is ice cream. The good news is that going vegan doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite foods. From Vivera steak to Violife’s impressive range of dairy-free cheese, you’ll be surprised at the amount of plant-based alternatives available. Before you know it, you’ll wonder why you enjoyed the taste of animal products in the first place.
“…I don’t know where to start!”
Reaching a stage where you’re thinking about veganism is a massive step in itself, so well done! There’s a lot to take in, but there are plenty of resources to help you.
