It’s that time of year again; summer is coming to an end (sob) and the nights are drawing in, but we can turn our thoughts to bonfires, beautiful autumnal scenery, and best of all: new warming vegan flavours at the nation’s favourite coffee shops
Starbucks was the first to announce its new offering for autumn: a vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte! We’re super excited about the return of PSL (in stores from today) and so glad it’s vegan this year! The drink combines Starbucks Espresso Roast, pumpkin pie-flavoured sauce and steamed milk – topped with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Be sure to ask your server to make it with a plant milk such as oat or almond, and skip the whipped cream (because, baby cows). PSL can be enjoyed hot or iced.
For now, it seems the product is launching in Europe only (the UK, the Netherlands, France, Austria and Switzerland), but we have our fingers crossed that we’ll also be able to get our mitts on these in the US soon. The Pumpkin Spice Latte in America unfortunately still contains dairy, but for our friends across the pond, Starbucks announced this summer that it was launching two vegan Protein Blended Cold Brews.
New vegan treats are also making an appearance at Costa coffee shops in the UK, with the launch of an autumn-inspired Vegan Sticky Toffee & Pecan Cookie, as well as a Thai Red Curry Meal Pot (yay for more vegan lunch options). The indulgent cookie, available now, contains a gooey toffee centre and is finished with a sprinkle of pecans – sounds delicious! Meanwhile, the Thai Red Curry Meal Pot, launching on Thursday 4 October, offers a fragrant, lower calorie choice for lunch.
Costa also has a range of coffees which can be made vegan by opting for coconut or soya milk. Sadly, the chain’s new bonfire inspired drinks contain honey – but here’s hoping for some vegan drink launches at Costa in time for the upcoming festive season!
We’re yet to hear Caffè Nero’s plans for autumn launches, but the Italian-themed chain already offers vegan delights including coffees, teas, chai lattes and hot chocolate with oat or soya milk, a falafel and humous flatbread, porridge, orzo pasta with Mediterranean veg, and an apple and blackcurrant crumble bar. Stay tuned for details of any new vegan delights.
Pret A Manger
Pret is a go-to option for many vegans, with its already extensive range of plant-based food and drinks (dark chocolate and almond butter cookie anyone?). The chain has just announced several new sweet treats and soups for autumn, in stores from 25 September, and we literally cannot wait to try them!
They include Almond Butter Bites, Almond Butter & Jam Brownie, Dark Chocolate Salted Almonds, and a Coconut & Mango Bowl. Vegan soup flavours are Pea & Mint and Tuscan Bean. For every full-size soup pot sold Pret will donate 10p to the Pret Foundation Trust.
Pumpkin spice lattes will also be available at Pret – just ask for it to be made with soya or rice-coconut milk so it’s vegan. And if you take your own cup you’ll receive 50p off your order.
