It’s set to be one of THE big food trends of 2018 and today Tesco will launch its first ever range of 'wicked' plant based dishes, unleashing the mighty flavour of plants.
Hungry vegans, prepare to be excited as you will now have more choice than ever with the launch of Tesco’s exclusive new range of plant-based ready meals and foods-to-go.
The new brand, Wicked Kitchen, will make struggling to find flavoursome vegan convenient foods a thing of the past. The assortment of mouth-watering meals has been created by Veganuary Ambassador Derek Sarno, Tesco’s Director of Plant Based Innovation, and will celebrate everything that is “wicked and tasty about plants.”
The new products will see an appetising selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads, ready meals and even pizzas, in a variety of exciting favourites. It is now easier than ever before to make cruelty-free choices even when on the go.
Recently demand for vegetarian and vegan food has soared as a result of lifestyle choices such as Meat Free Mondays and flexitarian diets.
In the last year alone Tesco has directly seen the effect of those lifestyle choices with demand for chilled vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes soaring by 25 per cent. And as a third of the UK population now identifies themselves as “flexitarian”, the number of those cutting back on animal products and following a plant-based diet is set to increase by 10 per cent this year.
Crispy carrot pastrami wraps, wicked-meated barbecued ‘shrooms, rainbow curry bowls, teriyaki noodles, mushroom Bolognese and caponata pizza are just some of the delicious meals that will be available in over 600 Tesco stores and online from today. These vibrant meals have all been created for flavour and pack all the zing, punch and crunch to encourage Brits to eat more veg – and they’re available at a great price too! There will be a total of eleven ready meals and nine food-to-go options that will tempt even the most devoted meat eaters.
As a vegan chef and the co-founder of Wicked Healthy, a plant-based food website that provides healthy recipes, Derek’s goal as director of plant based innovation at Tesco, is to create delicious, unpretentious vegan foods, he said:
When I first arrived in Britain from America I was hugely surprised at how little choice there was for vegans and those considering a lifestyle change.
For too long, vegans have been overlooked, with many offerings that are available seemingly created to appease rather than truly please.
Wicked Kitchen plans to change all that and I’m proud to work with Tesco and offer all its customers delicious meals to get them on board with this growing foodie revolution.
Tesco is one of the biggest supermarket retailers in the UK, serving over one million customers every day. These new products will mean that fast, affordable and convenient vegan food will be available to more people than ever before. Everyone from those in rural countryside to big cities will be able to enjoy these tasty treats which will mean there is even less excuse not to live a plant-based lifestyle. With the choice of 20 new products from a variety of cuisines going on sale, there will be something for everyone, including gluten free options.
Tesco made the decision to add this range as they realised that giving up meat is the way forward, they have predicted, that people cutting back on animal products and eating a plant-based diet, is set to rise 10 per cent next year and they are staying ahead of the game.
Recognising this growing trend Tesco and Derek want to bring plant based market from a niche to mainstream with delicious ready meals, salads and sandwiches that leads with flavour, crushes hunger and tantalises the taste buds.
