You don’t always need cheese to make a banging pizza. But when you’re vegan and you finally see the option when you’re out, who would say no to a kilo of your finest, grated dairy-free option on your Margherita?!
2017 saw an unprecedented vegan cheese boom across the UK and this, coupled with the huge increase in people trying Veganuary this year, has seen more people looking for familiar naughty treats including easily-accessible vegan pizzas.
But just where can you get heart-stoppingly great, plant-powered pizza on your average UK* high street? Here are 7 recommendations..!
*if you’re outside the UK then, fear not, you’ll spot a few international options in this lowdown too.
All hail the FIRST chain to offer a mozzarella alternative! Zizzi’s separate vegan menu includes 3 pizzas, all made with their own brown rice-based Mozzarisella, which is a creamy and melty cheese. Have it slathered on a Classic Margherita, Zucca (with butternut squash, onions & spinach) or Pepperonata (with peppers, tomatoes and hot chillies). Or you can create your own with various delectable toppings!
- Pizza Express
Although they don’t have a dedicated vegan menu as yet (hint, hint), Pizza Express introduced their PETA Vegan Food Award winning pizza, the Vegan Giardiniera last year which comes with dairy-free mozzarella, tomatoes, artichokes, mushrooms and olives! Order it as default or ask to replace the mozzarella with the vegan version on any other veggie pizza.
- Pizza Hut
If like me, your childhood included being dragged to numerous loud and messy kids parties at the ‘Hut, you may have been put off going to one again. Or you went vegan and faced the sad notion of only eating the salad bar. But fear not! Pizza Hut came to their senses in 2018 and rolled out Violife vegan cheese across ALL of their UK restaurants. So you can have any Pan, All American Thin, Gluten-Free or Flatbread pizza with the vegan mozzarella alternative. Yes!
Check out their vegan-friendly options here – only available in the UK right now, but the rest of the world is bound to catch up soon!
- ASK Italian

This casual Italian restaurant now has a separate vegan menu and although the pizza options are slim, you can still create your own Vegan Prima Pizza with ASK Italian’s own vegan mozzarella and a choice of 3 toppings, including grilled aubergines, caramelised onions and sautéed mushrooms. Oh and it can be made with a gluten-free base!
Menu available here – select your local restaurant to check availability in your area.
- Bella Italia

Another big Italian chain that has an entirely separate vegan menu if you ask! Although Bella Italia have no cheese alternative (sorry folks), you can still create your own cheese-free Margherita with any two toppings or order their Mille Colori Pizza which is under 600 calories (if there’s any chance you’re watching your waistline) and comes with roast peppers, courgette, tomato sauce, salsa verde, pine nuts and a side salad. Not bad at all.
Take a look at the menu here – to make it easy, you can filter by selecting vegan under the dietary requirements dropdown.
- MOD Pizza
Ok so you may not have heard of this American chain before and it’s not found on every high street. But with new restaurants now in London, Nottingham, Leeds and Gateshead (with more planned to open), MOD Pizza is quickly becoming the new Subway for pizzas! What I mean by that is their speedy, counter-service style means you can get a big, hot pizza in minutes, creating your own pizza as you go. Choose your sauce (both red and BBQ are vegan), toppings and spices to go on any base with their optional vegan cheese. Simple!
For those of you stateside, MOD Pizza have locations all over the US!
- Papa Johns

With limited high street vegan pizza takeaway options (if you can introduce vegan cheese and bases in Australia, you can do it here Domino’s!) there is one place that has sufficed for many UK vegans and that’s Papa Johns. So no cheese is a bummer, BUT their sauce and hand-tossed dough are accidentally vegan as well as their BBQ, sweet chilli sauce and special garlic dipping sauce, which is super tasty (and will pretty much make you forget cheese even exists!) So order an XXL pizza on original or thin base, remove the cheese, add every single vegetable and get Netflix fired up.
Order yours at PapaJohns.co.uk
Plus, Papa Johns have loads of international locations.
