Hot on the heels of launching an entire vegan section in 125 of its stores earlier this year, Waitrose & Partners (the new name for Waitrose) has created a Vegan Cheese Ploughmans sandwich.
Made with cheddar style slice, juicy tomatoes, vegan mayonnaise and sweet pickle on malted bread, the new sandwich is bound to be a hit (our mouths are already watering). It’s also one of the first vegan Ploughmans sandwiches to be available in a UK supermarket and will no doubt be a welcome addition to plant-based out-of-home food options – with no falafel in sight!
The new sandwich flavour is part of Waitrose & Partners’ bi-annual product revamp, and replaces the Vegan Spicy Vegetable Curry sandwich released in April this year. The Vegan Cheese Ploughmans sandwich is available to buy now for the special introductory price of £1.95, rising to £2.60 on 19 September.
Other vegan lunch options still available to buy at Waitrose & Partners are the Vegan Sweet Potato & Ratatouille Sandwich and Waitrose Good to Go Vegan Mexican Butternut Squash Wrap.
Speaking earlier in the year, Chilled Vegetarian and Vegan Buyer at Waitrose, Chloe Graves, said:
“Our current selection of products has been selling really well week after week, with requests for more choice coming from our customers and partners, so we could clearly see there was an appetite to have more vegetarian and vegan options in our shops.”
The sandwich isn’t the only new vegan addition to UK supermarkets this week – budget frozen food chain Iceland also released its range of 13 new plant-based products, including alternatives to mince, meatballs and chorizo. Meanwhile, ASDA is set to release a vegan cheese board in time for Christmas, proving veganism is well and truly on the rise.
