Purezza, the UK’s first vegan pizzeria, is competing in one of the most prestigious pizza competitions in the world this week in Parma, Italy.
The Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza (World Pizza Championship) has been running since 1991, and now attracts an amazing 6,500 independent pizzerias from across the globe.
Purezza, which has restaurants in Brighton and London and is in the process of opening a vegan mozzarella factory (our prayers have been answered!) will be competing in the Pizza Classica category on 10 April. This category is for traditional Italian style pizzas, baked with wood fired ovens and similar to those found in Naples. Each competitor will have up to 12 minutes to prep and create their pizzas using pre-selected ingredients, before presenting it to the judges.
This is the first time a vegan pizzeria has entered the competition and Purezza will be using its own blend of cheese, dubbed Mozzarella 2.0, which acts and tastes just like dairy mozzarella but is allergen-free and completely plant-based – swoon!
Purezza’s head chef, Filippo Rosato, who will be taking part in the competition says:
“I can’t wait to show the judges just how good vegan pizza can be. Just to be able to compete and show off plant-based pizza at an event like this will have a huge impact on pizza culture not just in Italy but around the world–that’s how important the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza. I’ve been working on a special recipe to wow the judges for the past few months, and I’m really excited to see what they think.”
Purezza won several awards in 2018, including the National Pizza of the Year in the UK, where Purezza beat 15 of the UK’s best pizzerias with their Parmigiana Party pizza, and also the PizzAward 2018 in Naples for the Best International Pizza.
