Veganuary so far: 2 December 2014

It has been a busy few weeks at Veganuary HQ following the launch of the website on November 12th. We’ve been delighted with feedback from participants, existing vegans and international organisations, and are updating site content daily, with new recipes, blog articles and products. Veganuary.com is forever growing and developing, so please check in with us regularly.

So far over 1,500 people have pledged to try vegan this January! The majority of these are currently vegetarian, with omnivores taking second place and pescetarians coming in third. So far American participants outnumber the UK 2:1, there are twice as many Canadians as Australians, and three times more people have signed up in Spain than in Mexico. 88% of those that have made the pledge are female.

So far, Facebook is proving to be the best channel for finding out about Veganuary, with 76% noting it on their sign up form. And animals are by far the number one reason people are taking part.

1,500 people, however, seems very small beans when you think that we’re aiming for thousands of participants in 2015. But that’s where you come in…

We’d love it if everyone who has so far pledged to try vegan this January encouraged at least one other person to join them! Taking part in a pair or as a group not only increases our campaign momentum, it also makes the experience so much more fun to do! January is typically a dreary month (in the UK anyway!), but you can spice it up with vegan potluck dinners, meals out and recipe swaps. Why not have a morning tea shout at work every Friday in January, and try your hand at some of our sensational Sweet Treats?

What’s more, joining in with friends can take away some of the fear of the unknown… Not sure how to prepare and cook tofu? Go halves on the ingredients and create the dish together! (Top Veganuary Cooking Tip: Remember to press your tofu! This removes the excess water and stops it being soggy. Press the block between two dinner plates, with a tea towel on one to absorb the liquid, and stack a couple of heavy books on top. The tofu will be pressed while you prepare your other ingredients. Pat down the tofu with the tea towel and then use as directed in the recipe.)

And if the idea of cooking together isn’t impetus enough, then how about trying to get your city on the Veganuary map! The wonders of technology allow us to break down our participant data, so we can see exactly where in the world you’re trying vegan. There’s over 60 people taking part in London – the number one spot. Is your hometown listed yet?

  1. London, UK
  2. Madrid, Spain
  3. York, UK
  4. Barcelona, Spain
  5. Chicago, USA
  6. Los Angeles, USA
  7. Brighton, UK
  8. New York, USA
  9. Newcastle, UK
  10. Vancouver, Canada
