Veganize It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering what you will eat as a vegan, just think about the meals you already eat and simply <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/how-to-veganize-your-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">veganize them<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost every food you already make can be made vegan, even things like quiches and meringues that traditionally relied on eggs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, veganizing meals is no more complex than swapping dairy milk for plant milk or eggs in your cake recipe for flaxseed. So, don\u2019t worry about what you\u2019ll miss, because you don\u2019t have to miss anything at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>2. Climb Out of the Food Rut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While veganizing your favorite foods is a great place to start, why not use the opportunity to embrace some new foods, recipes, and ingredients, and leave behind the monotony of seven meals on repeat? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pizza, pasta, curry, and spaghetti bolognese are all delicious when made vegan, but there is much more to vegan life! For inspiration, head to our <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recipe section<\/a> to check out what\u2019s on offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find Brazilian Feijoada, mushroom shawarma, meatballs, jackfruit burgers, and many more mouth-watering main meals. We Need to Talk About Cheese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people, cheese is the staple ingredient in a vegetarian diet. It\u2019s what we put in sandwiches, grate over pasta, and grill on toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also seems to be an integral part of every meal we have ever been offered in restaurants (we\u2019ll get to that issue later). So, it\u2019s no surprise that we think we can\u2019t live without it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there <strong>is<\/strong> life after cheese. In fact, there is cheese after cheese. Non-dairy cheeses have come a very long way and will certainly satisfy that longing for gooey, stringy cheese on a Friday-night pizza. But <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/best-vegan-cheese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vegan cheeses<\/a> are not dairy cheese, and they don\u2019t taste exactly the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, some people prefer not to eat any cheese at all for their first few weeks as a vegan and then introduce vegan cheeses later on. Don&#8217;t Forget Your Reading Glasses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we start exploring areas of the supermarket we have never been to before, we may need to spend some time <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/vegan-label-reading-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reading labels<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everything that is vegan says so clearly on the front of the package. In fact, there are many \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/accidentally-vegan-products-usa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accidentally vegan<\/a>\u2019 products out there, but to find them, you may have to scan the small print. Now, this can be a chore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you\u2019ll realize that there is a whole heap of ingredients that you\u2019ve been eating without knowing what they are. Will I Ever Eat Out Again?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you will! Almost every US restaurant offers plant-based options, and many offer a full vegan menu. So, whether you have fast food, whole food, or gourmet tastes, you will almost certainly be catered for (check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/restaurants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restaurant guides<\/a> to explore options).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may even find that the meals on offer are tastier for vegans than for vegetarians. For too long, the lazy option has been to offer vegetarians a cheese-laden dish, and without it, chefs have to get creative and really show their skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, there are some truly delicious dishes available in the chains, but it is also worth checking out the dedicated vegetarian and vegan restaurants in your area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HappyCow is an invaluable tool to help you find your nearest options. Restaurants serving international cuisines often have great choices, too &#8211; just look out for ghee in Indian meals and fish sauce in Thai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>6. Vegucate Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who have a strong reason for wanting to eat vegan often find the transition easier as their motivation keeps them going, even when temptation comes knocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching some of the powerful and moving vegan documentaries can help us commit fully to this change we wish to make. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kick things off with <em>Vegucated,<\/em> and we also recommend <em>The Game Changers<\/em>, <em>Cowspiracy<\/em>, <em>Seaspiracy<\/em>, and <em>Earthlings<\/em>, though the latter is undoubtedly a difficult film to watch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/10-books-to-help-you-through-veganuary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vegan books<\/a>, try Jonathan Safran Foer\u2019s <em>Eating Animals<\/em> or Melanie Joy\u2019s <em>Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs And Wear Cows<\/em>. Pay Attention to Your Nutrition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is perfectly possible to get every nutrient you need on a balanced vegan diet, but we do need to know which ones are trickier and what we need to do to get them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three we would suggest you focus on are <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/vitamin-b12-vegan-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vitamin B12<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/veganism-and-calcium\/\">calcium<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/iodine-vegan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iodine<\/a>. Dairy contains all three, so when you swap dairy out, you need to make sure you are eating something that will replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not as simple as just choosing plant milks, yogurts, and cheeses. Some will be fortified with all these nutrients, but not all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you love fortified nutritional yeast, you\u2019ll get a reasonable amount of B12. If you eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and tofu, your calcium intake will leap. But do your research, find out what you need and where to get it, and don\u2019t be afraid to supplement, especially with B12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>8. Be Kind to and About Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we became vegetarian out of concern for animals, there is a good chance that we felt we were doing all that was needed to prevent them from suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it can come as quite a shock to realize that not only are cows and hens sent to slaughter by the dairy and egg industries, but they endure a lifetime of torment first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have met countless people &#8211; including most of the Veganuary staff &#8211; who were horrified that they didn\u2019t know this information sooner, and they blame themselves for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please be kind to yourself. If you didn\u2019t know about these things, it was because the system is set up to keep you ill-informed. We believed the \u2018happy eggs\u2019 label and the adverts where cows graze in summer meadows. We fell for the glossy marketing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The important thing is now that you do know, you are doing what you can to right this injustice. More Than Food<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Veganism often begins with our diet, but it expands outwards, and before you know it, you realize your sweater is made of wool, your pillow is stuffed with feathers, and your shampoo contains\u2026 well, what on earth does it contain? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Becoming vegan can lead to an entire lifestyle overhaul, but there is no need to take everything you own to the charity shop and start again today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you next buy toiletries, cosmetics, household items, or clothing, you can choose vegan items, but you don\u2019t have to go from zero to perfection overnight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And actually, you should also know that there is no such thing as perfection. We\u2019re all doing our best in an imperfect world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>10. Find your Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can feel a bit isolating if you don&#8217;t have any <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/how-you-can-find-vegan-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vegan friends<\/a>, so connecting with others who feel like you can be hugely rewarding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find plenty of online groups dedicated to supporting new vegans or where they are connected by their love of a sport or hobby, such as vegan runners, vegan knitters, and vegan bakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also find local groups in every city and in many smaller towns too, where vegans meet up for a social or organize events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the group that works for you, and you\u2019ll get a warm glow from being among people who just \u2018get you&#8217; and knowing that you\u2019ve found a place where you can truly be yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more support, visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/choosedairyfree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Choose Dairy-Free<\/a> Campaign. <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Need support going from veggie to vegan?
