{"id":70279,"date":"2016-08-16T17:58:58","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T16:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/blog\/try-vegan-save-wildlife\/"},"modified":"2024-03-03T16:07:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T16:07:59","slug":"try-vegan-save-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-us\/try-vegan-save-wildlife\/","title":{"rendered":"Try Vegan &#8211; You&#8217;ll Save Wildlife!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Humans have wiped out 60 per cent of animal populations since 1970, with many scientists believing we are in the era of a sixth mass extinction, and the first to be caused by a species.<sup><a id=\"ref1\" href=\"#fn1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> The three leading causes of this unprecedented massacre are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Destruction of habitats, largely to create farmland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wild animals being eaten<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fishing<sup><a id=\"ref2\" href=\"#fn2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, agriculture and over-exploitation (including fishing) are significantly greater threats to biodiversity than climate change.<sup><a id=\"ref3\" href=\"#fn3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Quite simply, eating animal products is destroying our wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meat is driving the destruction of forests, as more and more land is needed for grazing and to grow feed. If we didn\u2019t eat animal products, a lot less land would be needed, and the forests could remain intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"796\" src=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112037\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching-400x265.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching-768x509.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching-800x531.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/coral-bleaching-150x100.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, our desire for fish is decimating the oceans. More than 30 percent of the world\u2019s fisheries have already been pushed beyond their biological limits or are in need of dramatic action to restore them,<sup><a id=\"ref4\" href=\"#fn4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> and whole aquatic populations are on the verge of collapse.<sup><a id=\"ref5\" href=\"#fn5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vast nets drag trillions of fish from the water, and with them \u2018by-catch\u2019 \u2013 animals not commercially valuable but who are caught just the same.
