That one exception is vitamin B12.<\/strong><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29452\" src=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oat-milk2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oat-milk2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oat-milk2-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oat-milk2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/veganuary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/oat-milk2-800x800.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>\n<p>It is possible to get enough of this vitamin on a vegan diet if you eat plenty of yeast extract, fortified plant milks and breakfast cereals but it is not worth risking being deficient so the advice is to take a daily supplement to be 100 per cent sure you are getting enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/vitamin-b12-vegan-diet\/\">Vitamin B12 is needed to keep our nervous systems, DNA and red blood cells healthy<\/a>, and it\u2019s not just vegans who need to keep an eye on their B12 intake.<\/strong> People with pernicious anaemia or who suffer from Crohn\u2019s or lupus, or who drink heavily, are at risk of being deficient. Since the risk of deficiency increases with age, the advice given in the US is for everyone over the age of 50 to take a daily B12 supplement regardless of their dietary choices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do vegans need to supplement it?<\/strong> <strong>Well, the vitamin is found in animal products but it is not made by the animals themselves but by bacteria that live inside them, and often it is supplemented in animal feed, too. The B12 used in vegan supplements or fortified foods such as Marmite is made by \u2018farming\u2019 the bacteria directly and harvesting the vitamin.<\/strong> It\u2019s the same substance made in exactly the same way so it\u2019s not unnatural, or in any case, it\u2019s no more unnatural than any other use of microorganisms in bread, cheese, yoghurt, wine or beer.
