Despite what we\u2019ve been taught, fish isn\u2019t the superfood it\u2019s hailed to be and we can obtain the same essential nutrients from plant-based sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we consider the downsides of eating fish, as well the nutritional benefits of alternative plant foods like seaweed and microalgae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is fish really that healthy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fish is often marketed as the ultimate \u2018clean\u2019 superfood: it\u2019s a great source of protein, it\u2019s good for your brain and it keeps your heart healthy. Or so the adverts tell us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fish is indeed rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-za\/vitamin-d-vegan-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vitamin D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-za\/vitamin-b12-vegan-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B12<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-za\/iodine-vegan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iodine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-za\/selenium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selenium<\/a> and can be a healthier alternative to red meat because of its lower saturated fat content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are numerous health concerns associated with eating fish, namely because of <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/marine\/good-environmental-status\/descriptor-9\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollutants<\/a> like methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercury, a highly toxic metal present in most seafood, can damage our central nervous systems when consumed in certain amounts. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/10\/191016124557.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 study<\/a> warned that as more ice thaws in the Arctic due to climate change, more mercury will be released into the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as this, PCBs are listed as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/cancer-causes\/general-info\/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">probable carcinogens<\/a>\u201d, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciepub.com\/JEPHH\/abstract\/10976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worrying potential<\/a> for adverse health effects including liver toxicity, immune system problems and skin diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we\u2019re assured fish only contains low levels of these pollutants, medical bodies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/fish-and-shellfish-nutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS<\/a> still suggest those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy should avoid many types of fish because they can cause developmental issues. Image Credit: AdobeStock. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So\u2026what\u2019s the alternative?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For most of us, fish is an option rather than a necessity and we can obtain the same important nutrients from plant sources without the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcrm.org\/good-nutrition\/nutrition-information\/omega-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high fat and cholesterol content<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/veganuary.com\/en-za\/where-do-vegans-get-their-omega-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a> don\u2019t even originate in fish \u2013 they come from algae. If fish get them straight from the source, why don\u2019t we?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are thousands of species of algae and marine plants collectively known as seaweed, some of which have been eaten around Asia for thousands of years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it may not sound appetising at first, seaweed varieties such as Nori, Wakame, Kombu, Kelp and Spirulina are surprisingly versatile. It\u2019s also low in fat, making it a heart-healthy food too. Although there is risk of ingesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6551690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">too much iodine<\/a> if you eat a lot of seaweed, the risk from average consumption is very low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, microalgae is a growing area of interest in the food industry and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5793051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017 study<\/a> found that it\u2019s a great source of essential fatty acids like EPA and DHA. Walnuts, edamame, flaxseeds, chia seeds and hemp seeds are other vegan omega-3 sources, but the best and most reliable source is a supplement made from microalgae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market for plant-based fish alternatives is booming more than ever before, with swaps for pretty much everything you can think of.
