Preparing vegan ingredients

This is one of my favourites when I want something different for breakfast! It’s a savoury salad which I have with ‘Indian’ tea and Rotli. (Rotli is also known as Roti or Chapatti.)


  1. 2 fairly large carrots
  2. 1 fresh green chilli
  3. Less than a tablespoon oil – I use olive oil or sunflower oil
  4. 1/2 a teaspoon of Rye/mustard seeds
  5. 1 pinch of Jiru/cumin seeds
  6. 1 pinch of Hing/asafetida
  7. 1 pinch of turmeric


This recipe serves 1


  • Grate the carrots
  • Slice the chilli
  • Put the oil in a pan
  • Add the Rye, Jiru and Hing
  • When the seeds pop, add the grated carrots and chilli
  • Stir
  • Add the turmeric
  • Add salt to taste
  • Cook for a few minutes
  • Enjoy with another meal, have it with Rotli like I do, or get creative and perhaps use it as a filling in a sandwich 🙂
