Britain’s favourite TV show is back: and this time there’s a vegan week!
For the first time in the show’s eight-year history, bakers will ditch dairy, eggs and animal products for one week only to produce their culinary delights. GBBO judge Paul Hollywood said the show is including the plant-based tasks to be representative of the UK – where there are now more than 3.5 million vegans.
Paul told the BBC:
“Veganism seems to be growing and we wanted to represent that.”
He also claimed he wants the baked goods to be of an exceptionally high standard:
“You can’t just say: ‘It’s okay for vegan [food].’ It has to taste good, period.”
Meanwhile, fellow judge Prue Leith said she was fascinated by the vegan bake-off:
“You shouldn’t miss that one. If you’re a vegan or are thinking of becoming a vegan, or think about it and worry about how it will change your life, it’ll shock you. It shocked me as well, honestly.”
Vegans were hopeful of some plant-based treats during last year’s show, when contestant Rav Bansal spoke of his interest in vegan baking. Sadly, Rav turned out not to be vegan, and used an abundance of egg and dairy products in his tasks.
It’s unclear whether any vegan bakers are taking part this time, although the 12 contestants have some interesting backgrounds – including a nuclear research scientist and a former prosthetic technician.
Meanwhile, we’ll have to wait until GBBO is back to discover exactly what vegan delights the bakers will make using alternatives such as aquafaba, flax eggs and plant milk – but we’re sure to be drooling over their creations!
