Emily Deschanel is an American actress best known for starring in the comedy-drama crime series Bones as Dr. Temperance Brennan.
She first went vegetarian in high school when she learned about the ethical, environmental, and health implications of eating meat. From vegetarianism, Deschanel made the transition to veganism, and since then, she’s been an advocate for minimizing harm to all animals.
I don’t believe that animals are ours to use or to harm. They feel pain … I don’t think it’s ethically sound to hurt an animal, when it’s perfectly healthy and doable to survive on non-animal sources of food.
She is a keen supporter of animal charities such as Farm Sanctuary, Mercy For Animals and HSUS, and also the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). Her main concern is farmed animals because it is such a huge industry and so many animals are affected.
She has brought her son up as 99% vegan according to an interview with People:
He’s 99 percent vegan. My husband’s not 100 percent vegan so sometimes he eats some eggs with him, but I try to make sure [they’re] coming from my friend’s eggs. But most of the time he’s 99 percent vegan.
