I started my vegan journey towards the end of 2014. I've never been a meat eater but eating fish had crept into my once vegetarian diet.
Initially I wanted to get back to being a ‘good’ vegetarian and so I thought some reading would do me good; firstly I read ‘Eating Animals’ by Jonathan Safran Foer. That moved me to stop drinking milk and re-consider my relationship with all dairy products, I stopped eating fish straight away. At this point my husband got interested in what I was learning and suggested we watch some films and do some reading together. We watched Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives and, of course, Earthlings. I consider myself a well educated person but could not understand how I had avoided understanding the torture that animals suffer at our hands both directly, and by not understanding how food is produced. Both of us became vegan straight away.
We used the fantastic resources of Veganuary to try vegan and loved it! We both feel a lot healthier and are enjoying exploring new foods and buying new cook books! We have continued our reading and are learning so much about health and how to look after ourselves better- I have also lost 17lbs in two months! All thanks to going vegan!
The main thing I am grateful for though is that my eyes are now open, I am learning something new every day and it is exciting and rewarding to be vegan.
