Jme is the stage name of London grime artist Jamie Adenuga.
Born in 1985, he co-founded the grime collective and record label Boy Better Know and co-owns a T-shirt company. His Youtube channel is entitled Manbetterknow. He is also a non-smoker and teetotal.
Jme actually began his career by producing mobile phone ringtones and developed from there. He has famously never signed a record deal, releasing his music under his terms and finding considerable success at the same time. He is also known as a huge Pokémon fan. Despite being outspoken and having links to numerous projects, the grime star very rarely gives interviews. He was, however, one of the stars of Simon Amstell’s acclaimed BBC vegan film Carnage, playing himself.
Jme has also incorporated veganism into some of his lyrics. His song Pulse 8 includes the lines:
I’m in Nandos with a veggie wrap
Or I’m sitting in Leon, munching a gobi
Whichever one’s nearer
Vegan, now I see clearer
No meat, no cheese, no milk, no eggs
Going vegan in 2012, he also includes the following line in his music:
Man don’t wanna see no dead meat on their plate like some barbarians.
Jme is very active on Twitter and is known to regularly Tweet about vegan cheese and the best plant-based establishments in which to eat. It is, of course, refreshing to find celebrities who are not only vegan but are willing to go that extra mile and actively promote veganism. After all, people such as Jme are hugely influential. That his lyrics also contain vegan references is also extremely laudable.
Being vegan, people think you’re an alien, people think that you’re different in some way. The only difference is you know something different, that’s all.
He also states:
I just learnt stuff.
That’s a very simple, but effective truth about why many people choose to go vegan, it’s a classic case of research and learning. And this is where celebrities such as Jme provide an important gateway to discovering such knowledge and provokes his fans to explore more about veganism and the reasons why he became vegan. This, in turn, leads them on their own voyage of discovery into the wonders of veganism.
