Pizza lovers will have something to smile about this week, as Pizza Express has announced plans to sell a vegan pizza in Waitrose & Partners
The Italian restaurant chain will be launching the Vegan Giardiniera in stores this Wednesday (12th September), priced from £5. Visitors to Pizza Express restaurants will be familiar with the pizza, which is topped with red onion, black olives, artichokes, closed cup mushrooms, tomato, vegan mozzarella, garlic oil and fresh parsley on a 9” ‘classic’ base.
Richard Mills, head of retail at Pizza Express, commented:
“The launch of our Vegan Giardiniera into the grocery range is part of our strategy to broaden our offering around dietary choice. It is also set to complement our lighter eating single serve Leggera range and Gluten-Free Classic options. We have worked hard to ensure each pizza tastes delicious and offers a restaurant quality that families can enjoy at home.”
The brand’s senior marketing manager, Timothy Love, added that there is a definite gap in the market for vegan pizzas in supermarkets, and the Giardiniera had been very popular in the company’s restaurants. He also said that Pizza Express has seen a massive rise in customers selecting vegan choices.
Pizza Express will also be creating new vegan offerings as part of its autumn restaurant menu, launching on 18 September. These will include a Peperonata pasta and a vegan carrot cake, as well as a Puttanesca pizza. The pizza will feature olives, capers, garlic, tomatoes and herbs in a Puttanesca sauce, topped with seasoned jackfruit — although sadly it won’t be available in supermarkets just yet.
However, last week we announced more new retail offerings from Waitrose & Partners, which launched a vegan cheese ploughmans sandwich in stores. The supermarket is also due to release its own brand vegan fish’less fingers and vegan soya Bolognese from October.
