The Retreat was born out of frustration at the way the human race treats animals. A rescue centre which would save tormented, abused, sick, injured and unwanted animals from a certain death was therefore founded. Many animals who have escaped the horrors of farming and the torturous practices that happen in farms now live happily and free at The Retreat. Others are injured live export sheep, cows and pigs saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, Christmas turkeys and worn-out battery hens.
They are now a sanctuary to over 1,000 animals and birds, many of whom have suffered greatly at the hands of humans. The Retreat is a not-for-profit organisation with all staff being vegan. All funds raised go to the welfare of the animals who come into The Retreat’s care and where possible animals are re-homed in permanent loving homes. The Retreat operates a genuine no-kill policy. They aim to educate the public and remind people that all animals need commitment, care, love and respect and that animals should be neutered to avoid more unwanted litters.
