A new study has found that vegan dining is so profitable for restaurants in America, that more than half (51%) of chefs added plant-based options to their menus in 2018, a 31% increase on last year.
The news makes it even easier to adopt a vegan diet, with businesses keen to meet the growing demand for plant-based food. Restaurants that added vegan options saw a 13% rise in business as a result – despite the overall number of people in the US visiting restaurants falling.
The study, by food industry insights company Foodable Labs, found that influencers such as bloggers are helping to drive the rise in plant-based diets. There was also a 79% increase in photos tagged and shared of vegan foods on social media last year.
Meanwhile, the consumption of vegan products rose by more than 300% in America.
There are now thought to be 1.6 million vegans in the US, and supermarket giants such as Walmart are also cashing in on the popularity of plant-based. The realistic burger alternative, Beyond Meat, has achieved phenomenal success Stateside, with its CEO, Ethan Brown, commenting:
“We’ve gone from pushing and really trying to convince to now just being in response mode where the consumer is now driving the ship, so to speak, and steering the ship and we are just trying to keep up.”
Let’s hope this news only drives more vegan options in catering and retail, both in the US and the rest of the world.
