Alexander Dargatz is a German bodybuilder who won the Bodybuilding World Championship in 2005 after having been vegan for five years previously.
But, where does he get his protein!?! He explains as follows:
First of all, it is true that you need protein to build muscle. However, I do not believe in an excessively high protein intake, as it operate many strength athletes. More than 2 g / kg body weight is not to my knowledge of scientifically proven benefits. In this amount you may also vegan without major problems when choosing protein-rich foods.
He believes that his power increased since becoming vegan and he stopped getting ill. He eats a diet with whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and takes one multi-vitamin tablet (which is less than most meat-eating bodybuilders). He tries to buy organic and never buys anything with artificial flavours, preservatives, hydrogenated fat, and flavour enhancers.
He is an animal activist and cites the environmental benefits of veganism as a main reason for him choosing a vegan lifestyle:
The millions of animals in factory farms produce a huge amount of manure and methane, which pollute the environment. This applies to any form of factory farming, whether cows, chickens or “fur animals”.
Rainforest is cut down to create grazing land for cattle. After a few years the soil is completely drained.
Animal husbandry is an incredible waste of resources.
