I have always declared myself to be an animal lover yet, prior to my journey towards veganism, I’d never questioned the hypocrisy of making such a statement whilst, most days, sitting down at the dinner table to eat the animals I supposedly loved!
My internal debate began a little over a year ago when I started following organisations such as Animals Australia. I started opening my eyes to the suffering that animals endured prior to ending up on our plates and I immediately realised there’s no such thing as humane slaughter and I had to seriously rethink my carnivorous lifestyle.
I discussed my thoughts and feelings with my husband and, to my surprise, he was really supportive (note: previously we had always been big meat eaters so I wasn’t expecting that reaction). So, after “picking” at my meat for another month or so, on 1 January 2014 my journey towards veganism officially began. I took a transitional path, initially becoming pescetarian, then vegetarian, and then vegan and, as they say, the rest is history!
I immediately noticed both the physical and emotional benefits of cruelty-free living. My body feels the healthiest it’s felt in ages (although there’s still plenty of room for improvement – but I’m working on that!) I know I’ll always be emotionally affected when I think about or I’m confronted with the suffering animals are forced to endure but it’s an uplifting feeling to know I no longer contribute to the world’s ugliest industries, i.e. the meat, egg and dairy industries.
In June 2014 I decided to create a Facebook page to unite my passion for food with my passion for cruelty-free living. I’m amazed to have had support from people all over the world and, my hope is, that as a cruelty-free community we can inspire others to make the small changes that, eventually, lead to bigger changes.
I feel it is really important to share knowledge without being aggressive and, so far, I’ve had some initial success with my husband becoming vegan and friends and family introducing more and more cruelty-free recipes into their own homes.
I recently attended “An Evening with Lyn White” where Lyn talked a lot about inherited thinking and it really resonated with me because I would often ask myself “why did I ever think it was okay to eat animals”. I realise now that whilst growing up I was conditioned to believe that animals such as cats and dogs were pets and animals such as cows, pigs and chickens were food.
I’m always asking myself “how can I do more to help animals” and I know I will always be asking myself that question because I will always advocate for those who are defenceless and voiceless.
I love connecting with other vegans. It’s awesome to know that there’s a worldwide vegan community and that everyday someone else is making their own connection and beginning their own journey towards veganism.
