I was really lucky to stumble headlong into Veganuary this year after yet another over-indulgent Christmas period. Actually no, let me start from the beginning....
I’d suspected for a while that dairy wasn’t agreeing with me so had been slowly throttling back on it for the past couple of years but aside from that I’ve always been a committed carnivore. After hitting the cheese a bit too hard over Christmas my suspicions were confirmed and I was beginning to regret my dairy splurge so when, just before New Year, my friend mentioned that she was doing Veganuary it sounded just what my body needed.
Two weeks in and I’d never felt so amazing. My energy levels had increased, a whole bunch of medical annoyances that I thought were just age had either gone or were getting better every day and I was losing weight without trying. On top of that, after a couple of days of not eating meat I started to realise that it didn’t actually smell very nice so I pretty much decided not to eat it again.
By week three I knew this was going to be a one way trip, stopped counting the days and started learning more about the other elements of veganism. Thanks to this site I now understand a lot more about the ethical issues and was pleasantly surprised to discover that aside from what I was eating, I was more or less accidentally vegan anyway and the bits that aren’t – well when they wear out I just won’t buy them again!
It’s now the end of Veganuary 2016, I feel healthier than ever before and the range of foods that I eat has increased dramatically. I’m loving the feeling that I’m making a positive contribution to the environment and animal welfare and I honestly can’t imagine anything that would want to make me give this up. Being vegan is awesome!
