I grew up, like so many other people, completely unaware that my food choices were affecting animals.
I knew I was eating meat but that was all it was… meat. There was no recognition that I was eating a pig, or a cow, or a chicken. There was no knowledge that a life had been mistreated, and ended, simply for my taste buds.
It was 2011, and my wife and I were living in New Zealand and working on a dairy farm. A nice little set-up that included free accommodation and food in exchange for four hours work per day. It was during this time that I was exposed to the full extent of how animals were used and treated as a commodity. The farmers genuinely cared about the animals, but only because they had a monetary value attached to them.
Seeing all of this cruelty first-hand, coupled with the fact that my Dad had just developed cancer, allowed me to make the connection and consider how my choices affected animals. I read that plant-based diets could lower your risk of cancer and, after watching Forks Over Knives (well, the first half as I could not watch the animal cruelty element), it was enough to help me decide.
My wife went vegan immediately and I transitioned at a slower-rate, gradually switching out components of my diet and lifestyle until I made the full shift. We read books, and spent our time travelling around New Zealand listening to podcasts by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau – which proved invaluable at that early stage and were a fantastic resource for information.
Upon returning to the UK, I joined The Vegan Society as Sales and Membership Officer and spent four fantastic years working with other organisations, charities and fellow vegans; such passionate people who genuinely care about making a difference in the world.
I joined the Veganuary team in October 2016 as Development Manager, and am proud to continue their fantastic work; reaching thousands of people worldwide and helping them transition towards veganism. In the process, we get to help save the lives of millions of animals and shape a greener, more compassionate world for us all to live in.
That’s a future I want to be part of.
