The Good Food Guide by Waitrose & Partners is bringing restaurants offering vegan menus even further into the mainstream, listing 65 restaurants with a vegan focus.

Elizabeth Carter, the guide’s editor, told iNews:

“As far back as 2014, The Good Food Guide noted that some of our top chefs were taking a more vegetable-focused approach, with meat playing a bit part.

“Chefs such as Alexis Gauthier, who is looking to transition to an entirely vegan menu by 2020, are paving the way. Following a plant-based diet is neither a trend nor a fad, but a lifestyle choice which is set to shift up a gear in the years to come.”

One of the guide’s featured vegan restaurants is Salvo’s in Leeds, a buzzing restaurant serving classic Italian dishes with modern touches served in stylish surroundings.

General manager Paul Smith told us he has noticed a rise in the interest in vegan food:

“We’ve always catered ad-hoc for vegan customers. Southern Italian food, in particular features a multitude of vegetarian dishes, some of which are vegan already and others which can be adapted. It’s about taking great natural ingredients and showcasing them.

“At Salvo’s we launched a vegan specific menu towards the end of last year due to the rising demand that we experienced and it has been a great success. We are looking to expand this with the introduction of a vegan chocolate Oreo dessert which we have been working on recently”.

The dedicated vegan menu at Salvo’s has five starter options as well as five main course choices. Mains include pizza del campo, topped with aubergines, peppers, mushrooms and rocket.

Salt House Tapas in Liverpool is a light-filled, two-level, contemporary space for charcuterie and small plates. It surprisingly also has a vegan menu, which is extensive and offers a wide range of light bites to choose from. Diners will also treated to some new and exciting tastes such as toasted figs, roasted grapes and pickled melon.

The Mountain Café in Aviemore, Scotland also features in the guide, with its vegan-friendly menu. The café has a reputation for fantastic food, a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and an amazing view of the stunning Cairngorm Mountains.

The 2019 edition of the Good Food Guide is now on sale, priced at £17.99.
