Veganuary’s 2019 campaign launched yesterday with a call on Parliament to ‘Try Vegan’ this January!

With just under a month to go until the New Year, bringing alongside it thousands of new Veganuary pledges, we have unveiled our ambitious 2019 campaign!

To date, over 250,000 people from 193 countries have taken our month-long pledge to try veganism. By the end of January 2019 we are expecting a further 300,000 people to have joined us in their journeys towards adopting a plant-based diet. 

But it’s not just members of the public who we are challenging to take part in Veganuary. This year, our campaign included a call on Parliament to ditch meat and dairy for January in the hopes of seeing a more plant-based Parliament set the standard for the UK’s consumption of primarily vegan foods.

Veganuary team members descended on Parliament yesterday, and urged Government to get their ‘house in order’. They were joined by campaign supporter and avid-vegan, Kerry McCarthy, Labour MP for Bristol East, for a photo-call challenging members of the Parliament to adopt a vegan diet for January.

When the sun had set, and commuters were making their way home, Veganuary took to the the London skyline with our guerrilla light projections. The images depicted the Prime Minister, Theresa May, and sent out a personal challenge to go vegan for January with us.

Beamed in front of diners and passers-by as they set out on the search for their next meal, these incredible projections became a real talking point, stopping people in their tracks.

The Government has so far done little to heed the advice of the scientific community, which states that reducing meat and dairy consumption is vital if we are to avert catastrophic climate change.

Public appetite for all things vegan continues to skyrocket, a theme which has not been matched by policy or political leadership. Claire Perry MP, the minister whose job it is to tackle climate change, refused to recommend that people reduce their consumption of meals like steak and chips. Baffling, and yet another reason we feel our Plant-Based Parliament campaign is necessary. 

Trying vegan for January by switching to tasty plant-based alternatives in the cafeterias of Parliament would be a simple step to take for our leaders to lead by example, and show they’re serious about tackling climate change.

Building on growing global interest in veganism, Veganuary has partnered with dynamic environmental and animal protection groups in India, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, South Africa, Chile and Peru.

We are offering a complete, and locally-tailored Veganuary experience for these individuals signing up for a 31-day vegan pledge in their native language, making Veganuary’s 2019 reach even greater and widespread than ever before.

Pledges taking part in Veganuary this year will be helped through their month-long journey of discovery by Veganuary’s team of plant-based experts and a vast social media community.

Participants will receive daily emails containing delicious recipes, meal plans, inspirational videos, helpful tips on nutrition, how to stock your cupboards and much more. They’ll also receive thought-provoking information about the impact of what we eat on our health, animals and the environment.

And if that’s not enough, the Veganuary website – the world’s largest online resource for vegan pledges – will be crammed full of exciting new content, including films from our supporters in show-business, professional sport and the culinary world.

High-profile supporters of this year’s Veganuary campaign include Dancing with the Stars finalist and Harry Potter actress Evanna Lynch, Arsenal footballer Hector Bellerin, actor Peter Egan, Aussie cricket legend Jason Gillespie, leading animal advocate Earthling Ed, A Place In The Sun presenter Jasmine Harman, TV and radio presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford, and wildlife ambassador Chris Packham.

2018 was huge for bringing veganism out of counter-culture. But 2019 will be the year when it becomes a considered lifestyle choice for millions embracing cruelty-free, healthy living
