Veganuary 2017 broke all records!
The campaign grew by 260% this year, with close to 60,000 people signing up to take the vegan pledge.
Who took part?
- 23,000 omnivores took part this year – which is a massive win for the animals as these people eat the most animal products.
- 25,000 people said they were vegetarian or pescetarian (people who are veggie, but also eat fish).
- 10,000 identified as vegan – many of whom are new to the diet and sign up to receive extra support. This is an important part of Veganuary’s work, as we know many people return to meat-eating without it.
The gender divide
Women continue to outnumber men when it comes to trying a vegan diet (88%, compared to 10%). Let’s try to even things out next year guys! We know there’s nothing sexier than a man who cares about animals. 🙂
Worldwide campaign
This year over half of our participants were from the UK, partly due to our London Underground campaign and strong connections with UK organisations. We also had large numbers taking part in the U.S., Australia, Canada and from virtually every corner of the world.
Why people are trying vegan
This January, like previous years, a concern for animal welfare was given as the top reason for people registering. That said, an increasing number of people selected health and the environment as their primary motivation, and of those who chose the ‘other box’, most suggested it was a combination of these reasons.
Thank you to everyone who took part and to those who helped to spread the word. We’re now working hard on our plans for our fifth Veganuary. It’s going to be huge!
