New Year, Same You!

Lots of cute piglets on the walk. Funny animals, portrait

Most resolutions are aimed at telling you that you’re not good enough. Every January, we’re hit with the same tired messages: Fix yourself. Become someone different. Change everything.

But what if you didn’t need to reinvent yourself?
What if it’s less about changing and more about returning to who you alread are?

The world is asking a lot of us right now. So this Veganuary, let’s flip the script and leave the resolution pressure behind: New Year, Same You.

What do you mean by „Same You“?

Trying vegan isn’t about becoming someone new – it’s about turning up the volume on the values that already make you you.

Maybe you care about animals. Maybe your health and fitness matter to you. Maybe you want to live more lightly on the planet. Perhaps you love to experiment in the kitchen or you’re simply craving a bit more balance.

Whatever brought you here, eating plant-based doesn’t mean giving up your favorite comfort foods or your identity. It just means making small choices that reflect what you already care about.

In a way, it’s not about becoming someone else at all; it’s about becoming more yourself.

Why try plant-based?

Over 25.8 million people worldwide participated in Veganuary in January 2025. Here are some of the top motivations that they shared for taking part:

For animals:  The average person eats around 7,000 animals in their lifetime. If you love animals, one of the most meaningful steps you can take is simply choosing plant-based versions of the foods you already enjoy.

For the planet: Animal agriculture is wildly destructive and leads to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and increased water use. Plant-based foods tend to have a lower carbon footprint than meat and dairy, and in many cases a much smaller footprint.

For wellbeing: Every year, participants surveyed tell us that they see noticeable wellness benefits from their Veganuary challenge, including a better mood (46%), higher energy levels (44%), and improvements to overall health (45%).

For a change: Eating plant-based opens up a whole new world of flavors and ingredients to explore! Foodies will love the new playground of recipes to try, but the culinarily challenged can rest assured that there are plenty of simple, no-fuss options out there too.

Is a vegan diet budget friendly?

Plant-based can be one of the most budget-friendly ways to eat and eat well. With a little planning, you can decrease your shopping bills while creating delicious and healthy meals.

When you join Veganuary, we’ll send you a free budget meal plan for inspiration. But you don’t need anything fancy to start. Staples like beans, lentils, oats, potatoes, rice, and frozen veg can take you a long way. None will break the bank AND they’re versatile so you can try lots of new meals.

So… what do I eat now?

You might be surprised by how much of your usual shopping is already vegan – pasta and marinara, beans and tortillas, fruit and veg, nut butters, popcorn, many types of bread… the list goes on.

And for the foods that do typically rely on meat, dairy, or eggs, focus on swapping, not reinventing. Love creamer in your coffee? Try an oat or soy version. Craving a burger? Most grocery stores have plenty of plant-based options.

You don’t have to give up the flavors you love. Just try them in a new way!

How do I handle meals with family and friends?

Let the food do the persuading! For dinner parties, offer to bring a dish you love – something familiar, cozy, and crowd-pleasing. Pasta night, taco night, curries, and stir-fries all have plant-based versions that will satisfy anyone. Lead with taste and comfort, and you can’t go wrong. For nights out, apps like HappyCow can be a lifesaver.
