Chatu Rai

The earthy flavours of this mushroom and mustard based dish will keep you coming for more


  • 500 gm button mushrooms, halved 
  • 1 potato, cubed 
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil 
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped 
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder  
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder  
  • Salt to taste 

For mustard Paste: 

  • 2 tbsp black mustard seeds 
  • 4 green chillies 
  • 5 pods of garlic 
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds  
  • 1 tbsp coriander Seeds 
  • Fresh coriander for garnishing 


  1. Grind all ingredients under ‘mustard paste’ into a smooth consistency. Add a little water if necessary 
  2. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the potatoes. Set aside
  3. To the same pan, add tomatoes, a pinch of salt and saute for 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add mushrooms and saute till half done
  5. Add fried potatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and fry for 3 more minutes. Reduce heat to medium and add the mustard paste
  6. Fry for 2 minutes, add salt and 50ml water
  7. Let it boil and continue to cook for 4-5 minutes
  8. Transfer to a plate and garnish with coriander leaves
  9. Serve with rice.
