Veganuary is a global initiative that encourages people to explore eating vegan for the month of January. By embracing plant-based foods, Veganuary promotes healthier habits, raises awareness about animal agriculture , and helps reduce environmental impact. In 2024 the campaign showcased the remarkable worldwide impact Veganuary had. The key achievements include:
- An astounding 25 million people globally adopted a vegan lifestyle during January*.
- Over 2,100 new vegan products and menu options were introduced worldwide during the month—the highest number yet.
- A record-breaking 300 businesses and organizations participated in the Workplace Challenge, including notable names like Salesforce, the City of San Antonio, DocuSign, Claire’s Accessories, Stanford Healthcare, and more.
- Veganuary gained over 10,000 international media mentions, featuring outlets such as KOIN (Portland), NBC4 (Washington, D.C.), CNN, *The Baltimore Sun*, *AdWeek*, and Today.com.
2025 is set to be even bigger as – five years after the campaign went global with its first international chapters in the US, Latin America, and Germany – it continues to expand with new Veganuary campaigns in Malaysia (in partnership with Malaysian Vegetarian Society and ProVeg Malaysia), Peru (in partnership with ARBA) and Canada (in partnership with Veganuary Canada Coalition) starting this year. From humble beginnings on a kitchen table in Yorkshire, the worldwide Veganuary phenomenon now includes campaigns in 20 countries and has had participants from every country in the world except North Korea.
Vegans come from all walks of life, and the incredible team of supporters proves it! From athletes and authors to film stars and adventurers, Veganuary showcases how thriving on a plant-based diet is truly for everyone. Furthermore, Veganuary now has more celebrity supporters than ever including Joaquin Phoenix, Alicia Silverstone, Paul McCartney, Alec Baldwin, Mya, Jermaine Dupri and many more!
People often wonder why they should consider eating vegan, and there are three main reasons: health benefits, environmental impact, and animal protection.
- For Your Health: Research consistently shows that vegans have a reduced risk of some of the world’s leading health issues, including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. A plant-based diet is rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants, which contribute to overall well-being and vitality. About half of Veganuary’s participants already report improvements to their overall health just after one month of eating plant-based.**
- For the Planet: Currently, 77% of global agricultural land is dedicated to animal agriculture, yet it only produces 18% of our global calorie supply. In contrast, the remaining 23% of agricultural land—used for crops—provides 82% of our calorie supply. Additionally, while efforts to reduce packaging and buy local produce are important, the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions originates from the farming stage, especially with meat and dairy production. Choosing a plant-based diet can significantly reduce your environmental footprint.
- For Animals: By opting for plant-based meals, participants help reduce the demand for animal-based products, contributing to a more compassionate world.
