Campaign’s global rise continues as new countries launch for 2025
(United States – December 4th 2024) – Veganuary – the global campaign to try vegan for January and beyond – is today launching its push for 2025 participation with head-turning campaign ads asking people to ponder the practices behind some familiar foods.
Using jarring imagery next to the question WEIRD? the series of thought-provoking ads highlight that:
- Billions of animals are killed every year even though eating them increases the risk of our biggest killers – heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers
- Cows make milk to feed their babies, just like our mothers do
- Chicken comes from birds bred to grow so big that often they can barely stand
- Animal farming is the leading cause of deforestation
- Sausages are literally pigs stuffed into their own intestines (UK version)

The attention-grabbing ads will run across social media platforms from today as registration for Veganuary 2025 officially opens.
Last year, around 25 million people took part in Veganuary globally* and 2025 is set to be even bigger as – five years after the campaign went global with its first international chapters in the US, Latin America, and Germany – it continues to expand with new Veganuary campaigns in Malaysia (in partnership with Malaysian Vegetarian Society and ProVeg Malaysia), Peru (in partnership with ARBA) and Canada (in partnership with Veganuary Canada Coalition) starting this year. From humble beginnings on a kitchen table in Yorkshire, the worldwide Veganuary phenomenon now includes campaigns in 20 countries and has had participants from every country in the world except North Korea.
Veganuary’s International Head of Policy and Communications, Toni Vernelli, says: “Most of us see the food we grew up with as ‘normal’ but when we stop to ponder the practices behind many familiar foods, they start to look a little bit weird. Veganuary is asking everyone to face the startling reality of how our food choices impact animals and the planet and consider whether trying vegan for January might just be a little less weird.”
