I am international level powerlifter, bodybuilder and a cool scientist with a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge.
Four years ago, I became vegan and started strength training, both at the same time. I stopped eating meat 12 years before. Initially, my decision to become vegan was based on the health aspect. However, the more information I gained about the negative consequences of factory farming, the more my decision of living a vegan lifestyle became motivated by morality. I don’t want to support and contribute to something I consider as being wrong and unnecessary. For me, veganism is about doing the least harm possible, to respect all living beings, the environment and ourselves.
I was athletic for my entire life; however, I have never found a sport I was exceptionally good in. During my PhD I started lifting weights. This sport totally fascinated me. It was incredible how much stronger I became in a very short time, how my body changed and how much more self-confident I felt. Only after 3 months of powerlifting training I could lift 1.5 times my body weight! My new year’s resolution for 2014 was to start competing in powerlifting and bodybuilding. I did it and felt in love with it.
In May 2016, I represented Grain Britain at the Bench Press World Championships in South Africa. This happened exactly 2 year after my first powerlifting competition and after I set myself the goal to compete at world championships one day. It started with a crazy dream. I didn’t expect it to happen that soon, but it really happened. It is incredibly important to dream big and work hard for your dreams if you want to be successful. You can do it too!
Science and teaching is another passion of mine. I love sharing my experience and knowledge on vegan nutrition and strength training. I apply general research findings to vegan diet to help others to reach their strength and body composition goals in the best way possible. Knowing what to do is crucial if you want to gain muscle and strength on a vegan diet. Spreading the knowledge, which I do on my blog (sciencestrength.com) and my youtube channel (sciencestrength), is my way to help people to reach their goals faster and to fight the myth that you can’t gain muscle on a vegan diet. All my muscle and strength is plant-based.
If you want to become lean and strong a vegan diet, but don’t know how, or if you have any questions, just contact me on social media. Don’t be shy. I am happy to help 🙂
