I was a big meat eater before I started.
I was seeing a lot of photos of food, Veganuary hashtags, and videos, all of my sister-in-law Joy Ogude’s journey. We were talking one night and I asked what it was all about. Now I’m going to be totally honest, the initial thought of giving up meat, fish and my beloved cheese had me a little sceptical! So I decided to try the Veganuary challenge for 7 days to see how I felt.
I did my weekly shop and was amazed from the minute I walked in as to just how many vegan options there actually are out there! I know this sounds extremely naive but I admit I judged too quickly and assumed id be living on lettuce, carrot and seeds for the week! Forgive me!!
The first four days of my challenge were life changing…I slept, like a baby, all night! And when I woke, I felt refreshed, I had energy I only remember from my teens! Not only that my skin was clear, no blemishes, even the bags under my eyes were lightening! I also lost 6lbs! I couldn’t believe it! At first I thought that this could be due to the fact that I hadn’t gotten off the toilet since I started (haha) but either way I was loving the results. This is when I called Joy and told her I was doing the challenge for the whole month. This was three months ago and still enjoying every minute!
I discovered hummus, coconut milk smoothies, hazelnut milk, nut roasts, tarka dal and desserts made from vegetables!!! All absolutely delicious, I wasn’t missing anything at all from my previous diet, and quickly found out from the absolutely amazing support group on Facebook, that anything dairy that you may be craving has a vegan replacement which is more than likely tastier!!
I have always been a massive foodie, and since starting Veganuary, I get to be so much more creative! I post all of my recipes on Twitter and the feedback has always been lovely! My family members have also enjoyed the meals that I make, and my mum and cousin are now full vegans with me!
