Former Smiths vocalist Morrissey is well known for being an ardent supporter of animal rights but did you know fellow band member and guitarist Johnny Marr is also vegan?
Marr was convinced by Morrissey’s militant stance and went vegetarian during the recording of the Smith’s seminal album Meat is Murder in 1985. “I figured that it wasn’t very cool eating meat” he told the Observer in 2009. Some years later, in 2005, he cut dairy from his diet too.
“I am very proud of the fact that 20 years on people tell me they became a vegetarian as a result of ‘Meat is Murder’,” he says in the book Document and Eyewitness: An Intimate History of Rough Trade. “I think that is quite literally rock music changing someone’s life – it’s certainly changing the life of animals. It is one of the things I am most proud of.”
Since the break-up of the Smiths in 1987, Marr has collaborated with some of the world’s biggest stars, including Talking Heads, Bernard Sumner and Bryan Ferry and has had a varied solo career. He’s led a rock and roll lifestyle in the past but these days is exceptionally healthy, tee-total and an avid runner, proving again that you don’t need meat to move your feet.
