I can distinctly remember the first time I ate vegan food. It was the first time I was staying over at my aunt and uncle's in 2014. It was an incredible burger made by my aunt Clea, and it left quite a big impression on me. But it still took me a while to really discover veganism. I had been a vegetarian from the age of twelve, a decision I had made after watching a film about factory farming at school. But veganism seemed like such a strange and extreme concept that I didn’t even really consider it. That all changed in autumn of 2016. It was shortly before my seventeenth birthday and I wasn’t in a very good place, physically and emotionally. I knew I had to make a change. While browsing Pinterest I stumbled over a pin that listed the benefits of going vegan. I was intrigued and started looking for all the information on veganism I could find. Online, people where raving about the benefits they had reaped from going vegan. Along with that, there was so much information and so many recipes, that at first it was quite overwhelming. But after five hours of research and about two litres of coffee, I had found information that made me believe that veganism was not only do able but also very necessary . There are so many animals out there, being exploited in ways that no living being should be. There was no way I was going to contribute to that. Knowing my parents would not be easy to persuade, I made a PowerPoint presentation with my reasons for going vegan. My parents were unconvinced but after viewing the PowerPoint, and listening to some of my arguments (and pleading!) they let me try it out for a month. Since then I have been a very happy vegan. Sure, it hasn’t been easy all the time, but as it is with life you just have to crack on and take everything as it comes. Veganism is not this huge concept it is often made out to be. The beginning may be hard, but it will sooner or later become part of your life. So try going vegan, at your own pace, with all the dedication you can muster and trust me you will not feel the need to go back!
