Evanna Lynch is an Irish actor and vegan activist. Born in 1991, in Termonfeckin, County Louth, she rose to prominence in 2007 with her portrayal of Luna Lovegood in the popular Harry Potter film series, appearing in the last four movies.
She has also appeared in theatre and is renowned as an advocate for healthy self-esteem and body positive attitudes. She became vegan in 2015, and even started a vegan podcast (ChickPeeps) in 2017. This colourful and upbeat listening experience is filled with useful links and brilliantly highlights her natural charm and enthusiasm for veganism. On the idea behind the podcast, she said:
I started it because I saw that so many people have a negative perception of vegans and find the lifestyle intimidating/alienating/elitist/unrealistic and that has not been my experience of it. I want to show people how you can be a joyful vegan, and how – even though it may be hard at first- it can be fun and rewarding and make you feel happier within yourself.
Evanna has also actively been involved with Peta2 – Peta’s youth division, and became a Veganuary Ambassador in 2017.
The film star says of her decision to go vegan:
It was just the right path for me. I felt like as soon as I went vegan, I was more myself, like I was just living according to what I believed, which is such a freeing thing when you finally commit to it. I never found a religion or a faith that was exactly in line with what I believed because there are so many things I’m not sure about, but I strongly believe in non-violence, that we shouldn’t be hurting other people or creatures.
During one of her podcasts, she reinforced this with the simple line: “Veganism is our natural state”.
An enthusiastic advocate for veganism, she is passionate about spreading the message of animal rights and living cruelty-free. Never shy of voicing her opinion, she has been labelled “outspoken” for her opinions on being an “ethical vegan”.
She has also shared vegan recipes, further engaging with new vegans and can often be heard speaking out about the benefits of going vegan for ourselves and the animals. Her work in raising awareness of eating disorders, following her own experiences with anorexia, should also not be underestimated.
She also wrote the foreword for Veganuary’s own 2017 book How To Go Vegan.
Evanna’s other screen credits include Danny and the Human Zoo and My Name is Emily. She has also starred in the Harry Potter video games series and the Lego Dimensions game – being immortalised as a Lego figure, must surely be every actor’s dream.
In 2018, Evanna Lynch recorded a video for Veganuary’s 2019 campaign on the topic of “Are Animals More Important Than Humans?” You can watch the full video below.
