Ellen DeGeneres is an American comedian, television host, actor, writer, and television producer.
After reading Diet for a New America, she became vegetarian, but went back to eating meat about 8 months later, stating the disconnect and it just being easier to put the suffering out of her mind.
She has since stated:
50 billion animals a year are killed and I think we all fool ourselves that there is some kind of happy cow and that it’s a quick death, that they just hit him in the head and that they are out. They are all in pain, they are all treated badly. They are all diseased and they are all pumped with antibiotics. It’s a very disturbing reality. And it happens every minute of the day.
Ellen married Portia de Rossi and held a vegan wedding. They have adopted two cows (Holy and Madonna) from The Gentle Barn, a farm animal sanctuary with a program that works by uniting inner city kids and at-risk youth with rescued farm animals.
Unfortunately, Ellen is no longer vegan, and has made the decision to eat eggs and fish again. However, we are happy that Ellen continues to support wild animal conservation and is a keen campaigner.
