Veganuary 2018 broke all records!
The campaign grew by 183% this year, with 168,542 people signing up to go vegan.
Who took part?
- Over 79,000 omnivores took part – a massive win for animals as these people tend to eat the most animal products.
- Over 60,500 people said they were vegetarian or pescetarian.
- 28,645 identified as vegan** – many of whom are new to the diet and sign up to receive extra support. This is an important part of Veganuary’s work, as we know people new to veganism are the most likely to return to eating meat.
**Our Food Frequency Questionnaire indicated that some participants were incorrectly identifying as vegan. We’ll be reporting on this in more detail when we process the post-Veganuary survey results.
The gender divide
Women continue to outnumber men when it comes to trying a vegan diet: 84% female compared to 14% male. Although this is an improvement on last year’s results when just 10% of participants identified as male. Come on guys – catch up! ?
Why people are trying vegan
This January, like previous campaigns, a concern for animal welfare was given as the number one reason for people registering. That said, health and environment motivations both increased this year and, for the first time ever, their combined total surpassed those choosing animal welfare. Of those who chose the ‘other box’, most suggested it was a combination of these reasons, but with other popular responses including: ‘I was dared to take part’ and ‘to make my partner happy!’
Whatever your reason, we want to send a HUGE thank you to you all for taking part – you’re the best! ❤️
PS Keep following – as we’ll be crunching the data from our survey results shortly and revealing how many of you lovely people are planning to stay vegan.
